How to spot a copycat

Lookalike UK ETA addresses

Examples use the reserved .example names. They show patterns, not real sites, and each one is run through the checker above.

  1. 01

The scheme name plus extra words

    Not official: uk-eta-application-online.example

Anyone can register a name that contains “UK ETA”. Only addresses that end in gov.uk are official for UK ETA.

  2. 02

“gov” or “official” in the name

    Not official: official-uk-eta-gov.example

A word that sounds official is not a government ending. Read the end of the address, not the start.

  3. 03

The real address at the start

    Not official: https://gov.uk.example.com/apply

Putting gov.uk in front of another domain doesn't make it official. The part right before the first single slash decides who owns the site: here, example.com.

  4. 04

    The @ trick

    Not official: https://gov.uk@example.com/apply

Everything before an @ in an address is a username, not the site. The browser opens the domain after it: here, example.com.

  5. The real one

    Official: https://www.gov.uk/eta/apply

Paying much more than the official fee above, beyond official levies, payment fees and card conversion, usually means a third-party site added its own service fee. Search ads can sit above the official result, so check the address, not the position.

“Other websites may charge more to apply. Avoid websites that imitate government services.”

FAQ

UK ETA: common questions

What is the official UK ETA website?

The official UK ETA (UK Electronic Travel Authorisation) for United Kingdom is at https://www.gov.uk/eta/apply. Official addresses end in gov.uk (or a subdomain of them). Apply on GOV.UK or in the official UK ETA app. Only addresses ending in .gov.uk are official.

How much is the official UK ETA fee?

£20, non-refundable. Usually valid for 2 years. Checked on 23 Oct 2026 against gov.uk. Governments change fees, so confirm on the official site before paying.

How can I tell if a UK ETA site is official?

Look at the end of the address, right before the first single slash. For UK ETA it must be gov.uk or a subdomain of them, such as gov.uk. A name that only contains “UK ETA”, “gov” or “official”, or has gov.uk at the start followed by another domain, is not official. You can paste the link into the free checker on this page.

Is there an official UK ETA app?

UK ETA app (UK Home Office).

I paid a third-party site. How do I know my UK ETA exists?

Ask the government, not the site: Check your ETA on GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/check-eta). You need the passport you used when you applied. It won't work if you applied recently and haven't had a decision yet: GOV.UK says to contact UKVI if there's no decision after 3 working days.
